The aroma is of a smoky Latakia presence combined with Oriental essence. As with many tobaccos this requires a little time before you will master the technique that works for you. It really needs to be sipped to bring out the flavour nuances. Two years later, it remains just as revelatory, and it's the only "regular" in my constantly expanding tobacco lineup. Customers (like me) feel gouged and abused for our loyal fandom. I do recall that I had a hard time keeping the stuff lit. Latakia blends in flake form are a rarity, and welcome. The crumble cake presentation is one of my all-time favorites, and the burning characteristics of this blend are superlative. There is only one thing I can say against Penzance. Then I began to analyze it for what it really is: an oriental blend, and a pretty damn good one too! I think the stress is put more on the orientals than the Latakia, which flares up every now and then as you progress with your smoke. I've found it's best not to let it get too dry even though it always seems wetter than I prefer my tobacco. Esoterica's Cardiff is an outstanding, well-balanced mixture of four Virginias, pressed until reddish-brown and then fully rubbed up. When compared against its peers, Penzance is very much on par with Samuel Gawith's Balkan Flake, and certainly not as tasty as Old Ironsides, both flakes of a similar genre. As a final note, the generous forum friend who sent me this tin, suggested making an after shave of itjust kidding, no doubt, but I'm starting to wonderHmm. Was my heart pure enough? The latakia remained ever present. Not much can I say that hasn't already been addressed many times already. After you relight it, you will get a note higher in taste, and with every relight it gets better, smokier, fuller. No more, Penzance is my new bench mark. tobaccos before continuing down this path. I can't give the details like the more experienced and knowledgable here. I got my first "new" pipe (not inherited) in 1968. I purchased a second tin and was equally impressed with this fine tobacco. But people are going nuts over Penzance not for its attributes, but for its lack of availability. Esoterica Penzance - when available, very limited! Tonight I had my big Savinelli billiard in hand and decided to give the stuff a shot. Suffice it to say that i do think the blend is worth picking up at fair price when you have tge opportunity. Given all this, we've first got to cut through the hype in order to give a proper review. The pouch aroma is almost musty/earthy, and the room note, although strong, does not seem to be penetrating. Truly?? You must be 18 years of age or older to purchase tobacco products. A class act from the creators! I dried it out more than I had been, and I through it in a cob. I looked at the clock and it was no where near 5:30, it would have to wait till I got home. I was Hooked. I have my turns with Latakia, during some periods I am not particularly fond of smoking it, and it was at such a time when I first smoked Penzance. Quiet Nights is very pliable and soft but does not fall apart as easily as Penzance. I do not plan on giving up on Penzance and perhaps it will one day be as exciting to me as it is to many others and I will in time and with experience understand why. This is not a powerhouse for nicotine, but that seldom drives my desire for any given tobacco. I keep Penzance around for when I'm looking for a good trade or need to buy something else I like. This is a VERY well done tobacco to be sure, but I dont get all the hype (and HIGH price) this one gets. these folks find these two blends overwhelmingly strong! It has a comforting room note that's smokey with Latakia, and with a slight sweetness. Hard to really pick apart individual tobaccos. smooth from start to finish. Buy some if it there but don't chase the shit. The Latakia was noticable, but not in great quantity, as were the Orientals. Its more similar to Dunhills London Mixture or Standard Mixture than it is to Margate, however I find London Mixture much better than Penzance, since its more full bodied. So, is it a good blend? I had been prepared for a heady tobacco aroma but was puzzled to only experience a mild new aroma for me which I take it is due to the latakia. The Latakia, albeit not dominating is very rich in flavors as well. Smooth flavor, no toungue bite, but rather a "coolness" on the tongue. In the early 90's, distribution changed hands, and a fan of the blends created Esoterica Tobacciana in order to distribute them . I find it appealing that this is such a well rounded tobacco, but at the same time, none of these elements shines in a way that compels me to want it the way some of my blends do. And don't hoard it so the rest of us who do like it can't buy it. The concensus of this many reviewers and the accumulated highest rating is no accident. It's always the same. After lighting (which it readily took and held for the remainder of the smoke), I realized that this was indeed a damn good smoke. Its all top note and there is no fullness that I can speak of. Sadly, this will not make it into my rotation for now. The Virginia varietals are very sweet with some flavor notes of decaying grass and earthy-richness. Strenght is mild to medium. 4. There seems no point in enthusing about a tobacco that one can hardly ever get one's hands on. The smoke is headily rich and hangs heavy in the air; qualities I really enjoy. The tightly pressed flakes are fun just to feel and smell. There are literally far better blends available that actually smells like tobacco instead of the perfume counter at Macy's department store. Luckily Pipes and Pleasures of Columbus Ohio had this in stock, and I managed to order 'some' which a friend who lives in Ohio collected for me and sent over to the UK. Because of the decent amount of Virginia leaf in Penzance, it ages especially well for an English style tobacco blend. Penzance is a wonderful, full flavored flake. I was browsing Craigslist for the usual stuff. But besides that, Penzance is awesome and is easily in my top 5 favorite English blends. Fairly one dimensional but not bad at all. I have tried some 60 blends( a relative neophyte, I guess). The tin is packed with flakes which just stay together until you no longer wish that they do so, then nothing more than a slight trembling of the fingers is required to break the flake and load one's bowl. And then every pipe-smoker should go out and find some more, because it really is that good. The comparison to Laphroaig is spot on in its iodine tartness and malty sweetness. This tobacco flake nearly falls apart upon handling. To date, I had tried most of the Dunhill English blends, but had never smoked an English in a flake/crumble cake style. UPDATE--I'm docking it one star because I found it fussy to work with and I started to detect an unpleasant soapy taste. If you like English Blends you're gonna like this one, I can almost promise it. Smoky virginia, rich, heavy in the room. The market drives the price and not all of us can afford things that drive up the price. It mellows and melds the tobacco flavors so that they are less distinguishable. No problem to get and keep lit, The after taste is a very pleasent soapy flavor, Leaving you with the urge to light up another bowl. The taste and aroma of vintage book shops, leather, mild spice, and a smokey comforting finish washes across the palette. No doubt contributing to my lack of smoking satisfaction is the absence of the pscho-active effects most attribute to nicotine. They both look and feel similar, smell similar, and smoke similar. My wife told me to either throw out the "science experiment " or she would! Sweet Virginias/Orientals announce themselves often and evenly throughout the bowl with the latakia countering them in such a way as to prepare the palette anew for another exchange of those quality VA/Oriental leaves. It was there and then gone or so it seemed to me. However out of the tin it is in fact very moist and pliable. In this case, the answer is no. Still not smokable. Unlike Final_id, I actually smoke tobaccos before I rate them. There is simply none finer. GOT GET SOME and try it another winner from esoterica. Long matured and easily crumbled to facilitate pipe filling. I can safely say though that this blend is the first where I can really taste the varying flavours and the changes throughout the bowl - as a novice I thought I was missing something but it was just that I was not smoking the right tobaccos! just one of those just gets better with age. Upon initial lighting and the 1st few puffs I sensed the Latakia spice and the Va sweetness as seperate components. I have the better portion of a pound from a bulk bag, and smoke it very rarely as i doubt ill find it again easily or cheaply, however i am glad i have it. ---------------------------------- update 3/05 - I take back the negative side of my review and provide a few revised thoughts. But - and it's a mighty big but: scarcity virtually amounting to non-availability - not just in the UK - has created a ridiculous situation. This is just a very strong blend with no subtle tastes or palate textures. So I did. This happened once when I had to fight to get it lit, and tended this way toward a couple of late bowls. This is the most enjoyable and relaxing English smoke!!! I've heard about pipers paying immense amounts of money for just tiny amounts of this blend, and personally I find it a bit ridiculous. Each slice literally crumbles effortlessly. A great smoke indeed. But there are lots of blends just as good that aren?t so finicky. Very highly recommended! Being that it is in Germany and needs to be shipped overseas this is a costly alternative, but it is available and I would recommend that to overpaying for some Penzance. I should not be too wet or too dry. Its mild, not pungent, however it is very musty like old books. The process is very smooth and linear change. So, if you want to smoke this, make it one of the last bowl of the day, otherwise, if you smoke something lighter afterwards, it will taste bland. Then you light up and wow! Penzance was my first experience with latakia. I've only had one bowl so far (I'm still smoking it as I type) and although it is smoking a little wet for me, I like it a lot. As suspected, fresh tins remain my favorite latakia smoke. I normally smoke potent blends such as St. Bruno and Marlin Flake, but the taste of Penzance is so heavenly refined, that the (absent) nicotine-level is not all important here. I've heard great things about it, read rave reviews, and couldn't wait to try it. bags. Incorrect. I liked Penzance best in a Prince model pipe. It can tend toward bitter or hard if rushed. If you love Latakia then please do yourself the pleasure. I would probably enjoy smoking this tobacco for hours on end, though I have not done so. This is a truly magnificent tobacco. I don't think it lives up to all the hype that surrounds it but it is definitely a very good tobacco, try it if you enjoy English blends and when you first light up, pretend it is just another tobacco, not some holy grail of smoking and you won't be disappointed. About halfway through the bowl something strange happens. Not for everyday use, but if you're sitting on your own in the evening in your living room or porch without having to do anything, Penzance is your best friend. The flavors melded and were constantly held by a subtle presence of latakia throughout. Filling my pipe (God rest it's soul) with this gunpowder-like wormdirt was quite unpleasant as it fifn't really "pack" so much as it just poured in like a landfill. Prefer it in the evening with a porter or stout. It was so bland that I gave the second half of the tin away to my tobacconist. I won't go into details, because there are no details to go into. I purchased a pound of it in 2013 from my tobacconist and just finished my last bowl. blends,which are actually lat.bombs,there is that smooth,mango,(totally bite free) creaminess which I could happily enjoy ad infenitum. All in all a good smoke, I recommend it!
